Dr. Ivory joined the Department of Communication in 2005 after receiving a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His primary research interests deal with social and psychological dimensions of new media and communication technologies, particularly the content and effects of interactive communication technologies such as video games, virtual environments, and simulations.

Dr. Ivory has served as head of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's Communication Technology division and currently serves as vice-chair of the International Communication Association's Game Studies interest group.
